Anniversary 04:04
Who Says the owl outside my window Who Do you think you are where will you go It's been three hundred sixty five dry days And the desert's got a mercenary way Of stripping you Down to your bones Run Is my instinct oh so strong Run to the bright horizon And the desert's gonna help me clear my head When the sunrise turns the sky to red I remember How far I've come If I ever think to double back Oh no no, the landscape is too cold Dress again in city black Oh no no, I'd rather pan For gold Dust What we're made of, what we'll become Dust clouds the bright horizon And the wind can raise a devil made of sand To tear the future from my hands Gotta hold on fast Stay on this road If I ever think to double back Oh no no, the landscape is too cold Dress again in city black Oh no no, I'd rather pan For gold And an anniversary's a funny thing With weathered hands no trace of rings The day still stings The bell still tolls The day still stings The bell still tolls Who

Don’tcha always hurt the ones you love Never meaning to Oh you think they’ll stay and so you shove Til you both are blue One is sorry The other sad Gone too far til it’s all gone bad Stretched so thin All the love runs through Til there’s nothing but a memory of The days before you knew When the love comes down Like a curtain fall All you hear is the loud, loud Heartbeat call And all the checkered flags Couldn’t stop that car Until you jump the track Til you’ve gone too far Disbelieving and in denial One more step towards the final trial Stretched so thin you can see the truth Til there’s nothing but a wish for The days before you knew Oo, the days before you knew Somewhere deep down you know it’s there In the darkness that makes you scared And that memory is so unfair Makes you wanna travel back in time To the days before you knew Oh the days before you knew The days before you knew Oh the days before you knew Don’tcha always hurt the ones you love

LONG LIVE LOVE There’s blood on my lips And a bruise on your cheek But lord knows the earth will inherit the meek I fall to my knees and surrender to this The spoils of the battle The trophy your kiss, oh Long live love The shine of the stars in our eyes at the start Long live the fire in our hopeful hearts Long live love The sting of the heartbreak The sweet reconcile The flights on your staircase A long barefoot mile The truth may deny us But still it will save We light our bonfires And choose our own names, oh Long live love The aching and scars when it’s run its way through Long live the memory of wanting you Long live love We lay down our arms like the battle is won But sure as a bullet that’s shot from a gun Oh the lines in the sand that is slipping away We fall back to come back And fight one more day, oh Long live love The shine of the stars in our eyes at the start Long live the fire in our stitched up hearts Long live love Long live love Long live love

Merciless 03:07
MERCILESS Three A.M. Stuck thinking ‘bout your mouth on mine God I wanna be your valentine I’m out of quarters for the phone You and me No secret ‘bout this chemistry But I’m drowning in history Maybe better off alone Slow burn through another sleepless night The heart don’t lie but the truth is blind and merciless to me Heaven sent Is what you’d be if I was not hell bent On getting lost in the oblivion Of your love on loan Stay my hand Keep me from thinking ‘bout future plans Cause I’d only burn and then I’d crash Sinking hard like a stone Slow burn through another sleepless night The heart don’t lie but the truth is blind and merciless to me I said the heart don’t lie but the truth is blind and merciless to me Merciless to me Merciless to me

No Companion 03:23
NO COMPANION No companion But this cold sweat Trying to forget When this bed was warm No companion But this silence There’s a strange momentum On this clear morn I know solitude’s my friend But there’s something ‘bout beginning Every day beside the empty spot You used to lay I suppose I’ll grow accustomed to the extra space But oh the madness Of my dreams at night Trying to convince me I’m still in your sights I know I’m runnin’ That my heart will fight Any effort to release you To some former life No companion Oh someday soon I’ll turn a corner And I’ll be just fine And all that’s out of order Will fall into line Soon as it sinks in that you were only mine For a tiny while Like an alibi No companion Oh lover When we meet again I will be kind to you baby Be a solid friend But no companion Leaves the journey when There’s a choice to duck for cover Or sing in the rain No companion

about

Celia Chavez takes a new solo moniker, Babilonia, to celebrate this new 5-song EP. Following over a decade of steady touring and recording with Enrique Iglesias, P!nk, Melody Gardot, Julia Fordham, reggae legend Burning Spear and her original acoustic duo Petty Chavez, her new moniker Babilonia presents Chavez clearly as a skilled, compelling singer-songwriter claiming her place at the front of her own formidable band.

Chavez braids together strands of music she's lived and loved — her parents’ jazz and soul records in Seattle, her hometown; the indie electricity of New York City’s Lower East Side and Brooklyn; the songcraft of Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles (where she now resides).

The name Babilonia (her grandmaternal surname) has always held mystique for Chavez, along with its origin linked to the city of Babel, where legend says the peoples of the world were scattered and human speech fractured into many languages. “This project calls home and harmonizes all the voices I have summoned while in service to so many distinctive artists. Babilonia contains my vulnerability and power, joy and imperfection. She gives me a new creative center, a fresh universe to expand into.”

With fresh perspective and courage gained while grounded at home in the years following 2020, Chavez found guidance in producer Jeremy Little. Together they found a sonic, lyrical language to resist melancholy, embrace the bittersweet and become, song by song, an arrival at wholeness and peace.

Babilonia’s studio band includes Chavez on electric guitar, producer Jeremy Little on multiple instruments, plus Lucinda Williams’ rhythm section Butch Norton (drums) and David Sutton (bass). Additional musicians are Alex Feder (Still a Great Night, Enrique Iglesias, LP) and Zak Schaffer (Pete Yorn) on electric guitars; Jeffrey Babko (Jimmy Kimmel Band, Steve Martin and Martin Short) on Hammond B3 and clavinet; Michael Klooster (Smash Mouth) on keyboards; Jordan Katz on flugelhorn (De La Soul, Jason Isbell) and Simon Petty (Minibar), Chavez’ life partner (and the other half of their acoustic duo Petty Chavez) on 6- and 12-string acoustic guitars.

Celia Chavez California

Babilonia is the reclaimed creative persona of singer Celia Chavez. This new 5-song EP is an expression of her tenacious faith in love as a solution, and -- the reason for the new moniker Babilonia -- my calling home of all the voices I have summoned in support of other artists over the past decade-plus. ... more
